The craigslist.org listings for adult and erotic services have long been a thorn in the side of professional massage therapists. Listings that advertised services such as sensual massage and male-only massage were, many believed, thinly veiled solicitations of prostitution clients.

Reiki, a form of energy work practiced by many massage therapists, was shown to benefit men being treated with external beam radiotherapy (EBRx) for prostate cancer, specifically in the area of anxiety reduction. This research also examined the clinical effects of relaxation response therapy.

A bill requiring that massage therapists complete continuing education was signed into law by Governor David Paterson on August 30.
